#FlashbackFriday – February 2014 Antarctica: Sea Shepherd crew wake up to about 50-75mm (2-3inch) thick ice coating the foredeck and equipment.

What you didn’t see on Whale Wars or Chasing Thunder TV shows was the massive amount of ice that could build up on the superstructure and deck of the ships in certain conditions whilst they were chasing the whalers or the poachers in Antarctic waters.

Waves breaking over the bow, heavy rain, and/or sleet could quickly freeze in sub-zero conditions, building layer upon layer. In bad cases, it is strong enough to freeze the ship's bell at an angle to the deck!

Other than the slip hazard and damage to equipment, too much ice could make the vessel top-heavy and in extreme circumstances that could lead to the ship sinking, so the crew would have to go out and chip away the build-up of ice, sometimes more than once a day.

Imagine working in those conditions. Now imagine doing it as a volunteer! We owe a lot to the intrepid volunteers and crew who risked their lives to protect marine wildlife.

Together, we are giving precious turtles in Papua New Guinea a chance of survival.

With more than eighty percent of the ocean remaining unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored, there are probably many more that have yet to be discovered.
