Sea Shepherd Protects the Galapagos
The Galápagos Islands are one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, famous for their unique ecosystems and pivotal role in Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a critical marine habitat that supports countless species found nowhere else on the planet, but like most of our oceans, the Galápagos is under threat of illegal fishing, wildlife trafficking and environmental degradation. Sea Shepherd has been working tirelessly to protect this area, both in the water and on land.

Sea Shepherd has been working tirelessly to protect this area, both in the water and on land.
Combating Wildlife Trafficking: The K9 Unit
Illegal wildlife trafficking is one of the most significant threats to the Galápagos. Shark fins, sea cucumbers, and other endangered species are smuggled out of the islands, feeding a black market that is devastating marine populations.
In 2008, Sea Shepherd purchased 6 police dogs in Columbia and established a K9 Unit to tackle this problem head-on. This team of highly trained dogs and handlers patrol ports, airports, and shipping facilities, detecting hidden wildlife before they leave the islands.
The K9 Unit has been instrumental in preventing the trafficking of endangered species, acting not only as enforcement but also as a deterrent to smugglers. Their work and constant presence has helped to preserve the balance of the Galápagos ecosystem, ensuring its marine life stays within its own habitat.
Strengthening Environmental Laws
Poachers and illegal fishers undermine the rule of law in the Galápagos Marine Reserve. Since 2010, Sea Shepherd has worked with local authorities and legal experts to ensure that individuals are held accountable for their illegal activity.
Sea Shepherd has supported high-profile cases, gathered information to help prosecutors build strong legal arguments, and advocated for harsher penalties for those who exploit this vital reserve. Sea Shepherd also pushed for the establishment of specialized environmental courts, ensuring that judges and prosecutors are equipped to handle these complex cases effectively.
This work has reinforced the legal protections of the Galápagos Marine Reserve, creating a stronger foundation for long-term conservation efforts.

Educating Future Generations
Lasting conservation relies on education. By empowering the youth of the Galápagos, we’re building a new generation of environmentally aware humans who will continue to carry this mission forward.
Sea Shepherd’s educational initiatives, such as the Sharks of Galápagos schoolbook, teach students about the critical role sharks and other marine species play in maintaining healthy ecosystems. These programs foster a sense of responsibility among local communities, inspiring young people to take an active role in protecting their environment.
Enhancing Enforcement Through Technology
Enforcement agencies in the Galápagos face unique challenges, including vast distances and limited resources. Thanks to a generous donation from a Dutch nongovernmental organization (NGO), Emergency Communications Without Frontiers, Sea Shepherd was able to greatly improve the radio communication networks of several governmental institutions in the Galapagos such as the National Police and Agro-Calidad.
These improvements allow better coordination among agencies, enabling quicker responses to illegal activities in the marine reserve. By modernizing enforcement capabilities, we’re ensuring that conservation laws are more than just words—they’re enforceable actions.
The Fight Continues
The Galápagos Islands are a perfect example of nature’s resilience and evolution, but also its vulnerability. Illegal fishing and wildlife trafficking don’t just threaten individual species—they disrupt entire ecosystems, altering the balance of life that has existed here for millennia.
Sea Shepherd will continue to provide a holistic approach to conservation through the physical act of stopping traffickers at ports, creating and enforcing new environmental laws, and empowering local communities.
Preserving bio-diverse hotspots like the Galápagos is crucial in our conservation efforts for the entire planet. Join the fight below.
