ABC 10News has released “Edge of Extinction: The Last Vaquita,” one of the most important pieces of mainstream reporting on this crisis since Sea of Shadows. The special takes viewers straight into the Vaquita Refuge, where our crews and the Mexican Navy work every day to keep illegal gillnets out of the water.

The coverage lays bare the real threat: illegal totoaba nets set by trafficking networks that stretch across Mexico, the United States, and China. Vaquitas aren’t targeted — they drown as bycatch in these gillnets, the same nets our crews remove alongside the Mexican Navy in the Zero Tolerance Area.
During the 2025 Vaquita Survey, Kimberly Hunt embedded with our crews and the Mexican Navy, documenting the realities of this work: sonar scans for ghost nets, enforcement coordination aboard our ships, and the rare sighting of a mother and calf in the refuge. Her reporting gives the public a clear, informed understanding of a mission few ever witness firsthand.
We’re deeply grateful to Kimberly for her years of dedication to telling this story to her viewers in San Diego and to our supporters around the world. Her commitment has helped keep the Vaquita’s fight in front of the public, at a time when attention is one of the most powerful tools we have.
