Commentary By Valentina Crast
February in the Faroe Islands is currently free from whaling activity. The fjords are quiet, and the cold, dark winter days almost guarantee that no grind is called, even on the rare chance that someone spots a pod of pilot whales nearby.
In May we will be back on the ground, documenting the hunts, drawing attention to the inherent cruelty and to the violations that would otherwise go unnoticed.
We will be there to engage and inspire local anti-whaling voices to take part and grow more comfortable being brave advocates for the dolphins.

But before we get to that, we have plenty of activity underway abroad. Specifically in the UK, the work to Stop The Grind is gaining both momentum and attention.
Policy can be slow and tedious. There is no way around it. While I am committed to continuing to push, apply pressure, knock on doors and do the hard work required to keep pilot whales on the international agenda, once in a while we need the public to step in and help wake up your politicians. And when we ask you to do that, you consistently come through.
Just a few months ago we took our message to the European Parliament, supported by thousands of EU citizens who responded to our call to action. Across Europe, more than 700,000 emails were sent demanding action against the grind, shifting the discussion from cultural framing to legal and political accountability. I am pleased to say that work is progressing, and we have much more planned for 2026. More on that in due course.
Now we turn our attention to the UK Parliament.
An Early Day Motion has been tabled calling on the British Government to take a clear position against the killing of pilot whales and dolphins in the Faroe Islands. While Early Day Motions do not in themselves change law, they signal parliamentary intent and measure political support. When MPs hear directly from voters, it influences how seriously an issue is treated.
So if you are based in the United Kingdom, this is a moment where your voice will carry real weight. This is your call to action, and I hope we can count on you.
Please be a voice for the pilot whales and contact your MP. Ask them to support the Early Day Motion and get involved. We have made it easy for you. It only takes a minute.
Find your MP, send the message, and help ensure that this issue remains firmly on the political agenda.
