Defending the Vaquita from Cartel Trade

In collaboration with the Mexican Navy, Sea Shepherd is on a 24/7 mission to dismantle the cartel-driven totoaba trade that’s driving the vaquita to the brink of extinction. The illegal trade in totoaba swim bladders fuels a brutal black-market industry, and the gillnets used devastate the ecosystem, trapping everything from totoaba to the critically endangered vaquita—fewer than ten remain.

Our teams patrol the Vaquita Refuge relentlessly, removing nets, intercepting traffickers, and defending these waters. Every net pulled is a lifeline for the last vaquitas and a strike against wildlife trafficking.

Reef Defense: Protecting Scorpion Reef

Scorpion Reef, part of the newly designated Bajos del Norte Park, faces relentless pressure from illegal fishing vessels originating from Cuba. These activities threaten the reef’s biodiversity, including endangered loggerhead turtles that rely on its ecosystem.

Drawing on Sea Shepherd’s expertise in net removal from the Sea of Cortez, our Reef Defense campaign brings proven techniques and persistent patrols to protect Scorpion Reef. Working closely with local authorities, we intercept illegal activity, remove hazardous nets, and monitor the reef to ensure its long-term health.
