September 9, 2019 – On Maritime Executive: A group of scientists and conservationists have recorded the first vaquita sightings of 2019. Sea Shepherd crew on board M/V Sharpie sighted two pairs of vaquita on August 19 and 20, then two vaquita were photographed when sighted on September 3.

August 1, 2019 – There are only between six and 19 vaquitas left, a new study has concluded, and, unless swift action is taken, the endangered species could go extinct within a year. Sea Shepherd, a marine conservation group that actively works to help vaquitas by dredging up nets, also expressed hope.

July 31, 2019 – The vaquita porpoise has been critically endangered since the 90s, and there’s only one place in the world where you’ll find them: the Gulf of California in Mexico. Without more effective action, they may disappear from there, too, primarily due to the use of illegal fishing nets. Besides the Mexican Navy, Sea Shepherd—a marine conservation nonprofit notorious for its direct action—is helping in the fight by dredging up gillnets left in the ocean.
