If you are 70½ or older, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is one of the most powerful ways to protect marine wildlife. The gift goes straight from your IRA to Sea Shepherd, and you pay no income tax on it, even if you do not itemize.
Why give this way
- It goes to work immediately, keeping our ships on the water and our enforcement partnerships running.
- Lower taxable income. A QCD does not count as income, which may help lower Medicare premiums and tax on Social Security benefits.
- Meet your RMD. From the year you turn 73, a QCD can satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution.
- Simple. Your IRA administrator sends the gift directly to us. Give any amount up to $108,000 a year.
How to make your QCD
- Ask your IRA custodian for a qualified charitable distribution to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, using the details below.
- Allow 2 to 4 weeks for processing. The distribution must leave your IRA by December 31 to count for that tax year.
- Custodians often send the gift without your name. Ask them to include it, or let us know so we can thank you.

Common questions
I am turning 70½ in a few months. Can I give now?
Not yet. You must already be 70½ on the date of the gift for it to count as a QCD. After that you can make QCDs even though required minimum distributions do not start until 73.
Which retirement account can I use?
A QCD must come from a traditional IRA. A 401(k), 403(b), pension, profit-sharing plan or TSP has to be rolled into an IRA first. Check with your plan administrator or advisor.
Can my gift count as my required minimum distribution?
Yes. From the year you turn 73, a QCD can satisfy all or part of that year’s RMD.
Is the $108,000 limit per charity?
No. It is the total per person, per year, across all charities. If your spouse is also 70½ or older, they can give up to $108,000 from their own IRA, up to $216,000 together.
Can a QCD fund a life-income gift?
Yes. Current law allows a one-time QCD of up to $54,000 to fund a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust. Some limits apply, so contact us for details.
I already named Sea Shepherd as an IRA beneficiary. Why give now?
A QCD lets you see your impact now and support current campaigns, and it can often fulfill an existing pledge. Your beneficiary designation still carries your legacy forward.
I am younger than 70½. What can I do?
From age 59½ you can take an IRA distribution and give it without penalty, and deduct it if you itemize. At any age you can name Sea Shepherd as a beneficiary of all or part of your IRA. Please let us know if you do, since administrators rarely tell charities.
This is not legal or tax advice. Please consult your financial advisor about whether a QCD is right for you. See IRS Publication 590-B.
Publicly traded stock you have held for more than a year may give you a bigger tax benefit than cash. Your deduction is the full market value, you avoid capital gains tax on the increase, and there are no brokerage fees to sell.

Common questions
What can I donate?
Most vehicles and vessels, including cars, trucks, trailers, boats and RVs.
It has not run in years. Can I still donate it?
Usually, yes. Most vehicles are accepted running or not, except older vehicles whose value would not cover the tow. Submit the form to find out.
Do I need the title?
We would like the title, but if you do not have it, call CARS at 855-550-GIVE anyway. Other arrangements may be possible.
Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 93-0792021), and donations are deductible to the full extent of the law. Individual situations vary, so check with a tax professional.
How is the value determined?
See the CARS vehicle donation FAQs and IRS Publication 4303, which sets out how the IRS values donated vehicles.
Where do you pick up?
Anywhere in the continental US, Alaska and Hawaii.
Sea Shepherd uses CARS for vehicle and vessel donations. Your details are used only to complete the donation you start, and Sea Shepherd receives the information you provide. To be removed from our donor database, contact donations@seashepherd.org.
Many companies match their employees’ charitable gifts, often doubling or even tripling them at no cost to you. Search for your employer below to see if your gift to Sea Shepherd qualifies and how to submit it.
