World Ocean Day 2026

Marine wildlife faces mounting threats from plastic pollution, abandoned fishing gear, and marine debris, both in the ocean and along the shore. This World Ocean Day, Sea Shepherd volunteers across North America mobilized to celebrate and protect our ocean.

World Oceans Day volunteer cleanup

From the shores of California to the rivers of Virginia, from Ontario to Massachusetts, onshore volunteers mobilized to remove trash and debris before it could enter waterways and reach the ocean. While Sea Shepherd's ships defend marine wildlife on the front lines at sea, we need land-based volunteers to help protect the ocean where the water flows.

From Coast to Coast

Over a single weekend, volunteers turned out in more than a dozen cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, from Pacific beaches to inland rivers and lakes.

World Oceans Day Cleanups · 2026

Together, we removed nearly two tons of debris from beaches, rivers, lakes, and coastal environments, keeping it out of the waterways that carry pollution to the ocean and away from the wildlife that lives there.

Every piece of plastic removed is one less threat to a sea turtle. Every discarded fishing line collected is one less entanglement risk for marine mammals and seabirds. Every cleanup strengthens the connection between our local communities and the ocean we depend on.

Direct Action Starts at Home

Sea Shepherd was founded on the principle that protecting the ocean requires action, not simply awareness. For nearly five decades, our crews have defended marine wildlife through direct intervention, confronting threats wherever they occur, including the shore.

Removing debris from shorelines is just as important as the work our ships do on the water. Conservation is measured in pounds removed, habitats restored, and communities engaged.

These volunteers gave their time, energy, and commitment to defending the ocean in a tangible way, and the impact reaches far beyond a single weekend.

The Work Continues

The ocean does not need more spectators. It needs people willing to show up.

We will continue to show up for the ocean, clean up with our communities, and protect the animals we love.

Follow the fleet as the story unfolds.
