A Community on Watch

For years, local fishing communities have played an active role in monitoring their waters, reporting suspected illegal activity to federal, state, and municipal authorities. That collaborative effort is now expanding to include national and international conservation organizations, including Sea Shepherd.

A Station of Their Own

The gathering included the inauguration of a new casita de vigilancia, a station equipped with communications equipment and other resources that will support local monitoring efforts and improve coordination with authorities responsible for fisheries enforcement.

During the visit, the Sea Shepherd crew met with community members to discuss shared conservation priorities and hosted guests aboard the M/V Sharkwater, providing an opportunity to learn more about Sea Shepherd's work in Mexico and our long-term commitment to protecting the country's marine protected areas.

Guarding Two National Parks

Sea Shepherd's onboard biologist also presented an overview of the campaign to protect Arrecife Alacranes National Park and Bajos del Norte National Park. By maintaining a continuous presence in the parks, Sea Shepherd has helped deter illegal fishing, contributing to the seizure of thousands of illegally caught fish and the protection of countless more. Suspected illegal activity is reported to the appropriate Mexican authorities for enforcement and prosecution.
