Millions of people around the world have a deeper understanding and commitment to our oceans due to the life of Dr. Roger Payne, who passed this Saturday, June 10th at his home in Vermont.
Sea Shepherd joins those grieving the passing of this extraordinary life of inquiry, activism, wisdom, and discovery.
Any one of his achievements would constitute a life well-lived; the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Cetacean Translation Initiative, or the groundbreaking “Songs of the Humpback Whale,” which forged personal connections between whales and an entire generation.
The language of marine conservation is now spoken and understood by people all over the globe thanks to his tireless work, which highlighted not just the connections we each have with the natural world, but the obligations we all have as well.
We are grateful for his service on our Board of Directors and as our Senior Science Advisor. Together, the captains, crews, staff, and volunteers of Sea Shepherd pledge to continue our work defending endangered marine wildlife in his name.
He will be greatly missed.
